The Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series is taking place on the lower Hudson River, in New York City, from May 6-8, 2016. The race returns to New York for the first time in 96 years.
The defending champion is ORACLE TEAM USA accompanied by five additional teams representing Japan, France, England, New Zealand and Sweden. These sleek state-of-the art catamarans, designed by Oracle Racing, have 84-foot-high wing-masts capable of going three times the wind speed. Sailed by a crew of five, the vessel is designed to fly above the water on foils. “They’re the fastest boats out there, and look like they should be going up into space,” says Jimmy Spithill, skipper for the US team. “They’re like race cars. The harder you push them, the faster they go. Push too hard, though, and they’re liable to flip. Winning these races comes down to making as few mistakes as possible — because you will make mistakes.”
Unlike the America’s Cup, which takes place every three or four years with teams racing one-on-one, the World Series is a six-heat event spread out over three days with all six competitors competing against one another at the same time.
The 35th America’s Cup championship race will take place in June 2017 on the Great Sound of Bermuda.
Where To Watch
The event in New York City will be the closest spectators will ever get to seeing these boats race as the confined course does not go very far from shore.
